Makeup balms are taking the beauty world by storm.
More and more, these magical, melting substances are being introduced into skin routines in the place that makeup wipes ones were. Absolutely packed with nutrients and beauty benefits (more on that later), balms are quickly becoming the preferred method of cleansing + makeup removal. Why, you may ask? Well, let’s start with the why not of makeup wipes.
In many experts’ opinions, makeup wipes are a massive no-no.
They are terrible for the environment - they’re single-use, and according to the FDA, wipes are made from a combination of things such as polyester, polypropylene, cotton, wood pulp, and rayon fibers...many of which are non-biodegradable. There is an average of 35 wipes found for every kilometer of beach. They reak havoc on sewage systems if they’re thrown into a toilet, having to be fished out and added to a landfill anyway. In sewage systems, the wipes collect and combine with fat particles, causing sewage back-ups that potentially expose humans and wildlife to unhealthy bacteria.
Aside from the bigger picture that is the environment, makeup wipes just aren’t good for your skin - at all. To keep them moist and preserved, many makeup wipes contain harsh preservatives and chemicals such as phthalates, triclosan, and parabens, which are known to be endocrine disruptors - which can decrease or increase normal hormone levels in our bodies - and irritating to the skin. The high levels of alcohol that exist in makeup wipes can lead to premature aging and extreme dryness. Yes, these ingredients effectively dissolve makeup and dirt on the skin, but without cleansing these ingredients off after, they remain on your skin to be absorbed.
One of the most concerning aspects of makeup wipes is the physical motions it takes to effectively remove makeup. The rubbing and the pulling on the sensitive skin around the eyes are very damaging - these motions lead to premature aging and wrinkling. Instead, tapping motions are far better for stimulating circulation and reducing dark circles and eye puffiness. However, these preferred motions prove to be quite difficult when using makeup wipes. They may be efficient, but at what cost?
Makeup wipes need to be ditched.
They’re damaging to the earth, and they’re damaging to your skin. So, what’s the alternative, you may ask? Makeup balms.
